Key tattoos are used to represent mysteriousness, opportunities and the possibilities of the imagination. The general statement they make is, “I have something awesome and it’s mine, all mine”. It also says, “I have a wicked cool key tattoo”.
When a key is coupled with a lock in a design, it usually means that the person is close with someone else. This can represent a couple, sisters, or very close friends. It is also common for this type of design to use a heart somewhere in the image. A lock and key can also easily mean something else. When you see a person with this kind of design feel free to ask them why they got it.
There are endless possibilities when it comes to keys. Think about using Kanji characters, a lucky number, or even some mystical Celtic tattoo design for either the teeth or head of a key. A skeleton key with an actual skull on the head or teeth can paint a very dangerous and intimidating picture. There is virtually no limit to how simple or complicated the designs can be. It could take up your whole back, or be hidden away on the inside of a finger.
A key is a great place to start for a first tattoo. If you are thinking of getting a different pattern, think about adding in a key. It could easily be dangling from a dragon’s claw, or woven into the knots of a larger Celtic tattoo design. Once you are happy with the draft, get a small section done which would look good on its own. This way you can get a feel for what the process is like without having to plunge into something larger that you might regret.
Remember, a little planning goes a long way. The time and money wasted on something you don’t want, pales in comparison to the disappointment and frustration of how permanent a tattoo can be. Take your time, experiment with designs and make sure the image you like now, is something you can see yourself liking 10 years from now. Personally, I’ve always liked keys and their versatility.
